Nicklas Staub wins AJGA tournament; Maine’s Cole Anderson finishes third
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, ME - Nicklas Staub, a thirteen-year-old from Boynton Beach, FL, shot a 4-over-par 76 in the final round of the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Coca-Cola Junior Championship at the Sugarloaf Golf Club today to take home his first AJGA championship title.
RuQing Guan, a 16-year-old from China, took home the title in the girls division, marking her fourth consecutive AJGA tournament victory.
Cole Anderson of Camden, ME finished 4 strokes off the lead and in third place overall - the highest finish for a competitor from Maine in the four-year history of the tournament at Sugarloaf. Anderson, a rising sophomore at Camden Hills Regional High School in Boothbay, was the 2015 Maine Class A individual State Champion, and recently won the New England Junior Championship.
Caleb Manual of Topsham, ME finished in a tie for 14th, while Eric Dugas of Pittsfield, ME struggled on the final day and slipped to 26th after starting the day in a tie for seventh.
The only other Mainer to make the cut to the final round was Austin Legge of Cape Elizabeth, who finished in 51st place.
Mainers missing the two-day cut of 167 were Drew Powell of Bangor, Tom Higgins of South Portland, Anthony Burnham of Scarborough, and Max Altznauer of Cape Elizabeth.
The AJGA Coca-Cola Junior Championship is a 54-hole stroke play event, spanning four days with three rounds of competitive play. The tournament field is comprised of more than 130 male and female competitors ages 12-18, hailing from 4 countries and 17 different states, including eight players from Maine, all in the boys field.
The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Many of the top golfers on the PGA and LPGA are former AJGA members, including Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Davis Love III, and many others.
