Sugarloaf set to host AJGA Coca-Cola Junior Championship, July 28-31
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, ME - Some of the best junior golfers from around the world, including several from Maine, will gather at the Sugarloaf Golf Club for the 2013 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Coca-Cola Junior Championship, July 28-31.
The tournament will comprise 125 male and female competitors age 12-18, hailing from locations as close as Maine and as far away as Hong Kong. "This tournament is an amazing opportunity for us to showcase what the Sugarloaf Golf Club has to offer," Steve Niezgoda, Sugarloaf Head Golf Professional said. "These kids are truly some of the best young golfers in the world. We'll be seeing some of them on the PGA tour one day." Among the competitors will be seven from Maine. George Dolan of South Freeport, Gavin Dugas of Pittsfield, Cavan Hagerty of Bangor, Will Kannegieser of Minot, James Matel of Round Pond, and Daulton Wickenden of Rockport will all compete in the boys' tournament, while Kelsie Dessent of Fairfield will compete on the girls' side. "As Maine's premier golf course, we always take great pride in the condition and appearance of the course, especially when hosting a tournament of this caliber," Niezgoda said. "Having this event on the horizon has been good for the course because it has forced us to really press the gas pedal on some of these projects that otherwise might have stretched out over a longer period of time." In addition to the $1.7 million invested in the course last year by the Town of Carrabassett Valley and Sugarloaf to install a new, state-of-the-art irrigation system, the course has invested tens of thousands this summer on landscaping and other course improvements. The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Many of the top golfers on the PGA and LPGA are former AJGA members, including Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Davis Love III, and many others. The Championship will run for four days, during which time the course will be closed to the public. A qualifying round will be held on Sunday, July 28, with the first second and final rounds taking place on July 29, 30, and 31, respectively. The tournament field will be cut to a minimum of 50% of the field following the second round.
