Tucker Allen takes the lead after Round 1 of the AJGA Coca-Cola Junior Championship
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, ME - Despite wet weather and a 40 minute rain delay, the first round of the 2015 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Coca-Cola Junior Championship kicked off this morning at the Sugarloaf Golf Club. Tucker Allen of Granbury, TX leads the men's field with a one-over par 73; Andrew McInerney and Connor Henderson are tied for second place, one stroke behind Allen.
Reese McFarlane, of Cape Elizabeth ME, sits in fourth place with a first round, three-over par, 75.
The AJGA Coca-Cola Junior Championship is a 54-hole stroke play event, spanning four days with three rounds of competitive play. The tournament field is comprised of more than 140 male and female competitors ages 12-18, hailing from 17 different states, and 8 countries-nine of which representing the state of Maine.
The tournament field will be cut to a minimum of 50% following the second round.
On the women's side, SiQin Yu of Bradenton FL, Maisie Filler of Bloomfield CT, Christina Lu of Longwood FL, and Haeley Wotnosky of Wake Forest NC, finished in a four-way tie for first place with a six-over par, 78.
Among the other eight players from Maine in this week's tournament, Drew Powell of Bangor is tied for sixth place with a six-over 78, Cole Anderson of Camden finished 16 with a 79, and Caleb Manuel of Topsham finished ten strokes back in 35th.
The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Many of the top golfers on the PGA and LPGA are former AJGA members, including Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Davis Love III, and many others.
The championship will resume with the second and final rounds taking place tomorrow and Thursday, during which time the course will be closed to the public.
