Allen extends lead in Round 2 of the AJGA Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Sugarloaf
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, ME - Following a challenging weather day in yesterday's first round, Tucker Allen of Granbury, TX fired a four-under par 68 to extend his lead over the men's field in today's second round of the 2015 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Coca-Cola Junior Championship, at the Sugarloaf Golf Club. Christopher Francoeur of Amesbury MA carded a three-under 69 to take second place, while Brendan Ridge of Hanover MA and Amadeo Figus of Rome Italy tied for third place with a two-under par 70.
Allen notched five birdies and two bogeys to finish three under par in the first nine holes. On the back nine, he maintained an even par through hole 17, where he tallied his sixth birdie of the round, to finish with a two-day combined score of 141.
The AJGA Coca-Cola Junior Championship is a 54-hole stroke play event, spanning four days with three rounds of competitive play. The tournament field is comprised of more than 140 male and female competitors ages 12-18, hailing from 17 different states, and 8 countries-nine of which representing the state of Maine.
Only the top 50% of players, including ties, from the first two rounds advance to the third and final round.
On the women's side, Brittany Park of Fullerton CA, fired a one-over par 73 to surpass Christina Lu , SiQin Yu, and Haeley Wotnosky, who were tied for the lead after round one. Lu, Yu, and Wotnosky hold on to the second, third, and fourth spots with two-day combined scores of 156, 158, and 160, respectively.
Among the players from Maine in this week's tournament, Drew Powell of Bangor is tied for eighth place with a two-day score of 151; Reese McFarlane of Cape Elizabeth dropped back to tenth place with a 152, Cole Anderson of Camden finished in a four-way tie for fourteenth place with a 157, Caleb Manuel of Topsham sits in 36thplace with a 163, and Eric Dugas is tied for the 49th spot with a 168--all of which advanced to the final round.
The championship will resume tomorrow with the final round, during which time the course will remain closed to the public.
The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Many of the top golfers on the PGA and LPGA are former AJGA members, including Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Davis Love III, and many others.
