Sugarloaf Golf Club to open for 2014 season June 6

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine - The Sugarloaf Golf Club, Maine's premier golf course, will kick off its 29th season on Friday, June 6. Sugarloaf is the number one golf course in Maine, according to Golf Digest.

Though the golf club typically opens for Memorial Day weekend, Sugarloaf's maintenance staff elected to give the course an additional week to allow new turf to become better established before it was impacted by golfer traffic. And despite the coldest winter and spring seasons in recent memory, greens are in excellent shape for early June, and fairways aren't far behind, according to Head Professional Steve Niezgoda.

"We are off to a strong start, and we're excited to get the season started" Niezgoda said. "I'm very encouraged by the quality of the greens this early in the season, and we'll continue to make improvements as the season goes on."

Course crews have spent the majority of their time focusing on the greens, and performing various course maintenance practices, such as aerating and verticutting, to tees and fairways to promote growth. Sugarloaf and the town of Carrabassett Valley worked together over the past several years to acquire new covers for every green, which help to raise soil temperatures during the spring, and keep the grass significantly warmer through the night.

The maintenance staff at the Sugarloaf Golf Club is under new management this summer, with the addition of Shaun Osborne to the team as Course Superintendent.

Osborne spent the past 10 years at Boyne Highlands in Michigan, where he served four years as the Assistant Superintendent of the Arthur Hills Course, and the last four years as the Superintendent of the Donald Ross Memorial Course.

"This is a phenomenal golf course and I am really excited to be a part of it," Osborne said. "We have a great maintenance team with an incredible amount of experience."

In addition to the new green covers, the course also acquired a new fleet of mowers and other maintenance equipment during the offseason.

The golf course will play host to several high-level tournaments once again this summer, including the 2014 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Coca-Cola Junior Championship, August 18-21. The tournament will comprise more than 100 of the top junior golfers from around the world.

The Championship will run for four days, during which time the course will be closed to the public. A qualifying round will be held on Monday, August 18, with the first, second, and final rounds taking place on August 19, 20, and 21, respectively. The tournament field will be cut to a minimum of 50% of the field following the second round.

Also returning this season are several products to help golfers save on their rounds. The course is currently offering Fore Packs, which allow golfers to pre-purchase four fully transferrable rounds at a reduced rate, and then use those rounds later in the season.

And for golfers who plan to play multiple rounds throughout the summer, Seasonal Memberships are currently available at the lowest prices of the season. Both Forepacks and Seasonal Memberships can be purchased online at www.sugarloaf.com .
