Sugarloaf Golf Club named Maine’s best by Golfweek
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, ME - The Sugarloaf Golf Club was recognized as the number one golf course in the State of Maine by Golfweek in the magazine's April 10 issue, which features rankings of the top golf public courses in all 50 states.
The ranking marks the first time in more than a decade that Sugarloaf has landed atop the Golfweek rankings. Belgrade Lakes, Sunday River, Kebo Valley, and Ledges rounded out the top five in this year's rankings.
Known for its challenging layout and awe-inspiring vistas, the Robert Trent Jones, Jr-designed course has received numerous accolades from industry publications since it opened in 1985. However, this is only the second time in its history that Sugarloaf has received Golfweek's 'Best in State' distinction.
At the end of last season, the Sugarloaf Golf Club was ranked 96th out of the top 200 resort courses in the United States by Golfweek. Sugarloaf was the only Maine course included on the list.
"It's a tremendous honor to have the course recognized by Golfweek as the best course in Maine" said Sugarloaf Head Professional Zach Zondlo. "The fact that the Sugarloaf Golf Club has been featured in Golfweek twice in the last six months speaks to the incredible course conditions our maintenance staff has been able to provide, as well as the timeless course design and the unmatched player experience."
Founded in 1975, Golfweek has conducted its course rankings since 1997, and is considered one of the most respected rankings in the industry. Each year, the publication enlists the services of roughly 850 expert course evaluators who travel to and play courses around the nation, rating each on the basis of Golfweek's 10 strict standards of evaluation, to select the best layouts from two distinctly different eras: pre-1960 (classic) and post-1960 (modern).
Collectively, Golfweek evaluators have turned in more than 65,000 votes.
Sculpted into the mountainous terrain that lies in the Carrabassett River valley, the Sugarloaf Golf Club is one of the most challenging in the state. The most memorable holes on the course, the String of Pearls, feature a six-hole sequence that runs alongside the Carrabassett River.
Preparations are currently underway for its 32nd season, and a tentative opening day is set for Friday, May 19.
