Sugarloaf hosts first ever East Coast Pond Skimming Championship

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, ME - More than 50 skiers and snowboarders attempted to make it across a 60-foot man-made pond at Sugarloaf on Saturday, as the rest hosted the first ever East Coast Pond Skimming Championship.

Pumping water through its snowmaking system, Sugarloaf constructed a 60-foot long, 4-foot deep pond just above the Base Lodge, and hundreds of spectators turned out to watch 56 brave souls attempt to make it all the way across.

Many made it across the ponds unscathed, but most crashed (and splashed) into the frigid water, frequently drenching the crowd at the same time.
