What is an RSS feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a web content format that allows you to subscribe to websites. An RSS file is different from traditional web content because it simply contains information about recent updates; there are no colors, images or formatting. By using an RSS reader application you can automatically have this content brought to your desktop by subscribing to an RSS feed.

What is RSS for?

Quite simply, RSS files are files that allow other people, websites and programs to display information from other websites in a simple and automatic format. Since RSS is a standardized format it is easy for multiple RSS feeds from multiple sites to display information in other places. These places could be to your desktop via a RSS reader program, your blog, a local news site that needs trail and condition reports, etc. It is an easy way to syndicate information to many sources using one file location.
